Advanced Bass
Bluegrass bass playing can be perceived as simple. When it is done well it sure does sound simple, right? But getting there is not as easy as it seems! We will dissect that perception a little and get to the root and the '5' of it!
In this class we will examine some of the most basic elements and functionality of playing bass in order to deepen our experience and enhance our playing at an advanced level. If your foundation is not strong, you cannot build upon it.
We'll work on disappearing any obstacles, both physical and mental, that may be blocking that creative flow of thought to music. What's keeping you from playing that solo? We'll also delve into what it means to support as a bass player specifically in a bluegrass setting. What are you listening to when you play with others? Are you grooving? How do your note choices impact the arc of the song? We'll explore these concepts and much more.
Missy Raines
Missy Raines is a highly acclaimed veteran within the bluegrass scene. She is a GRAMMY nominated, 10-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year recipient, singer, songwriter, bandleader, and teacher. She has recorded and toured with a long list of bluegrass giants including Josh Graves, Kenny Baker, Eddie Adcock, Jesse McReynolds, Mac Wiseman, Laurie Lewis, Josh Williams, Claire Lynch, Dudley Connell, Don Rigsby, Jim Hurst, and more.
With a long history of teaching, Missy has students all over the world with her ArtistWorks School of Bluegrass Bass. ArtistWorks’ patented Video Exchange® Learning Platform connects master teachers with enthusiastic players in an industry unique social online learning environment where each interaction becomes a learning experience for all.
Currently, Missy is touring with her band, Missy Raines & Allegheny. Allegheny is a nod to the Allegheny mountains of West Virginia where Missy grew up and first listened to and learned to play bluegrass. With this hard-driving 5-piece ensemble, Missy has crafted a unique sound that reflects her earliest influences with a modern edge. A new album featuring this band, and produced by Alison Brown, is scheduled for release in 2023 on Compass Records.
