The Right (& Left Hand) Stuff
The course will cover ergonomic posture, left-hand fingerings and shifting (in 1/2, 1st & 2nd position) and variations in right hand technique for speed and volume/tone. We will examine the role of the bass player in a bluegrass/old-time ensemble, how to construct simple and effective (1 & 5) bass lines, and discuss basic chord theory to create moving/leading bass lines and simple solos.

James McEleney
James McEleney has recorded and performed across North America, Europe, and Australia as a bass player.
Born in Scarborough, he studied jazz at York University and now plays jazz, bluegrass, folk, and avant-garde music as both a bass player and multi-instrumentalist for acts including The Andrew Collins Trio, Sarah Jane Scouten, The Unseen Strangers, and The Sondheim Jazz Project.
A Juno nominee and two-time CFMA Instrumental Group of the Year winner, James is based in Toronto, Ontario, where he lives with his wife and daughter.
