Advance Clawhammer
Each day of this workshop will focus on a specific topic. They will be...
· Chords: How to use them in back-up playing, as well as how to incorporate them into your tunes. We'll look at useful inversions and alternate strumming patterns.
· Song Back-up: Learn some tricks and principles that will help make you better at backing yourself (or others) up once the singing starts.
· Ghost Notes, Bass Lines, Skip Beats, Not-So-Basic Strums, and Explosion Licks: Chris will share a bunch of little tricks that he uses all the time in his playing, and how to apply them to your playing.
· How to Learn Tunes by Ear: We'll look at how to methodically build arrangements of tunes by ear. Starting with a recording of a tune, we’ll build up several arrangements by adding techniques. We'll look at how this approach applies to learning tunes on the fly in a jam session.
An overview of each of these topics (including tabs and recordings) will be provided for each topic. Participants will have everything they need to go live in a cave on an isolated island, study, and eventually emerge as the next clawhammer Jedi.
Participants will be given a couple of simple tunes to work on in advance that will help facilitate a super week of musical education!
Chris Coole
Chris Coole is a Canadian folk musician who has toured and performed with the likes of The Foggy Hogtown Boys, Erynn Marshall, Ivan Rosenberg, David Francey, and currently The Lonesome Ace Stringband. He is known for his interpretation of Southern old-time music, as well as his original songs and instrumentals played on clawhammer banjo and guitar.
Through many workshops, as well as an instructional DVD, he has taught a league of people how to play clawhammer banjo. As a collaborator or sideman, he has played on over 150 recordings.
In 2016 he released his 2nd solo album entitled "The Tumbling River" which fRoots magazine called "Unassumingly excellent old-time country music."
Chris Coole wrote his first song about Wayne Gretzky when he was 7 years old. Since that auspicious (and very Canadian) start, he has recorded his own original songs on two solo albums (Old Dog, Tumbling River), as well as albums by The Foggy Hogtown Boys and The Lonesome Ace Stringband
